Distracted driving of any kind is a very dangerous thing. These days, tech distractions are the most common form of distractions. For truckers especially, it can be hard to resist the urge to check your phone while on a long trip. However, there are some ways you can avoid these distractions…

Tech Distractions: Avoid Them On Hauls

Hands-free tech

Tech distractions are so dangerous because they take your eyes off the road and hands off the wheel. However, it can be hard to avoid using technology outright when driving. For instance, many truckers like to use their phone’s GPS apps to guide them on their trips, especially the long hauls. Plus, they’ll also use them to play their favorite music too.

Therefore, it’s a good idea to try and make your tech as hands-free as possible. Phone cradles or mounts allow you to keep your phone up and in sight at all times, without you needing to take your hands off the wheel. As for music, try to make a playlist ahead of time, so you don’t have to worry about changing songs while in the middle of driving.

Take a break

Sometimes, tech distractions can also show up in the way of calls or texts. While everyone knows how dangerous texting and driving is, some people don’t think the same about talking on the phone while driving. However, that’s still a form of distracted driving, as it takes your full attention off the road. So what should you do if you have to call or text someone back?

The best and safest option is to take a break and check your phone. This is something you can easily do when you stop for gas, food, or just to rest. However, if you have to get back to someone ASAP, then pull over and call or text them back. It’s not worth the risk to do so while driving, even if you think you’re a safe driver.

Do not disturb

One of the most annoying tech distractions is a phone which just keeps ringing and ringing. Constant calls, texts, emails, and other notifications can easily cause you to lose your focus on the road. When it gets to be a bit too much, it’s time to put your phone on do not disturb. That way, you can still use it for GPS or music without being spammed by notifications.
