Moving materials around the workplace is a pretty common task. However, it’s also a common source of accidents. Therefore, it helps to know how you can best move things around safely, especially for those more-risky materials…
Moving Materials: Avoiding Accidents
Clear a path
Before moving materials around, you want to make sure you have a clear path to do so. Tripping over loose items is an easy way to drop whatever it is you’re moving. Not only that, but it could also create a new hazard in the process. Even if you’re using something like a forklift, having things block your path can cause you problems.
Therefore, it helps to take a moment and check the path you’re going to take. Look for anything which could trip you up, such as tools or wires, and move them out of the way if possible. Plus, for future trips, you can try to place some signage letting others know to keep these walkways clear.
Use the right gear
Moving materials around is also not always going to be a simple process. Certain types of material might require specific gear in order for you to move them properly. For instance, maybe it’s too hot or cold for you to carry bare-handed. Or, it could be dangerous to you if it breaks or spills.
That’s why you want to make sure you gear up accordingly. Be sure to put on any kind of safety equipment ahead of time. Even if you’re confident in your abilities, don’t use that as a reason to ignore safety procedures. Overconfidence is a common reason behind many work-related injuries.
Know your limits
You should also be aware of your own personal limits when moving materials around. Everyone is different, and as such, they’ll be more comfortable with objects of certain weights. Some people might struggle with heavy items, while others can move them no problem.
The risk arises when you try and go past these limits. Trying to move an object that’s too heavy for you can not only cause you to drop it, but also injure yourself too. Therefore, don’t be afraid to ask for an extra hand when needed, or make use of equipment that’ll make moving things easier.
