Getting into a car accident is pretty hectic. Whether you’ve been injured or not, you’re in a state of confusion and worry. Where do we go from here? What will this cost me? How will I get to work tomorrow? Your brain is working a mile a minute and during this time, it becomes extremely easy to make mistakes in how you handle the process. From taking information, to taking pictures— there are a few common post-accident mistakes that people make time and time again. While it might not seem to matter all that much, taking these steps can keep you from losing out on compensation.

Common Post-Accident Mistakes

Admitting Guilt

Do not be so quick to utter those words ‘I’m sorry’ or ‘I merged into their lane’. The truth is, you might not know. And admitting fault to any degree can really come back to bite you when it comes down to technicalities and receiving compensation. That person might have merged into you as well, they might have been texting, they might have been drunk. The thing to remember is that you don’t know anything for sure yet. So hold off on making assumptions until all the facts come back.

Not calling the Police

While we often try to keep an accident situation as amicable as possible, do not convince yourself, or let the other party convince you, not to call the police. When there is no police involvement, there is no legal documentation. Not having that piece of the puzzle can really hurt you if you end up needing medical attention, or if one of you is not following through on their end of the deal.

Not seeking medical attention

If you’renhurt, even if you aren’t really ‘feeling it’ fully yet— go ahead and seek attention. If you’re filing an auto injury claim, you should report it as soon as possible to ensure quick compensation. This will also ensure that the claim will be seen as valid under the eyes of insurance. If you wait a week and then go in for back pain, the chance of that claim being denied is a bit higher than if you go the same day.

Not taking your own pictures

Remember that you have to protect yourself in any way possible. This includes making sure you have your own documentation of what happened. When it comes down to a ‘my word against yours’ situation, not having your own photos can really be a hindrance to getting your compensation and being able to prove your claim.

Not contacting your insurance company

When someone has caused an accident and is trying to figure their way out of paying for the whole shebang, they will often make a suggestion. “Why don’t we handle this between ourselves and avoid the insurance company?” In theory, this sounds great. You skip all the technicalities, the process, and the potential for their trying to not fully compensate. Instead, you and this person take matters into your own hands and go it alone. The problem with this? It is not uncommon that the person will disappear. Now you have no contact and a hefty bill with no one besides yourself to pay it.

Dealing with an accident is a process, and it can be frustrating. But what is more frustrating is missing out on proper compensation due to these common post-accident mistakes. No one is perfect, and some stumbling is likely, but making sure you follow through on all the steps can save you money, time, and frustration in the long run if you follow through.
