Senior Driver Safety Tips: Ruling the Road, After 65

1: Do not take prescriptions and drive

One of the most important things you can do as a senior driver, is know your medicine and your limits. Some medications cause drowsiness, fatigue, confusion, and so on. If you are on a new medication, or even one you’ve been taking for a while now— you have to understand and accommodate for the side-effects. Driving under the influence can be potentially harmful to yourself and others— not to mention, illegal.

2: Participate in timely vision and hearing tests

While no one likes to admit it, vision and hearing problems are quite a problem— especially at a later age. Making sure that you’re up to date on your exams and that you honor the recommendations made by your doctor. While it might not be what you want to hear, take what they’re saying into consideration and go from there. Ask questions if what they’re saying doesn’t make sense to you. If need be, seek a second opinion. But, ultimately, make the decision that is safest for you and those around you.

3: Avoid adverse weather conditions

You know it’s supposed to snow on Monday? Go out Saturday and stock up for a few days. Need firewood? Call that sweet son of yours who drives a truck. Driving in the snow, heavy rain, or sleet is dangerous enough and anyone who can avoid it— should.

4: Adjust your seat and mirrors before you go

Make sure before you drive that you’re in the ideal spot and have the perfect vantage point. Take your time, adjust those mirrors and scoot the seat up. Make yourself comfortable and make sure you can properly see in front of you. Chances are, your windshield could use a wiping down— those things get nasty. The key is just making sure that you are in the ideal condition to get behind the wheel, every time.
