Summer injuries can be quite commonplace for children. As school lets out and the days get longer, kids spend more time playing. In turn, they become more susceptible to injury. There’s more to explore, they’re less protected by what they’re wearing, and they’re spending more time outside. In theory, it’s great! The kids are staying active, the weather feels perfect, and you get a little more time to yourself. But, with the good— always comes a little bad. In this case? That’s the increase of injury risk for your kiddos.
Summer Injuries: Common Types and Causes
Bicycle Accidents
One of the most common types of summer injuries for children come from bikes. While riding bikes can be a fun activity, it can also lead to a number of injuries. But, head injuries are some of the most serious. One way to help prevent this is by ensuring your child wears a helmet that fits properly. Without fitting properly, the helmet can do almost no good in the event of a crash. So, tighten those straps before they go.
Falls
Another common cause of injury to kids comes from falls. Kids love to explore. Anything from climbing trees, playground sets, fences, and practically any other object close by. Because of this, it is not uncommon that a child might experience an injury in event of a fall. As a result, many hospitals will see an influx of kids coming in for head injuries, sprains, and broken bones due to falls throughout the summer.
Water Injuries
Water injuries are another leading cause of injuries in kids. While there is nothing like spending a hot day by the pool, parents must stay aware of the injury risk that comes with that. Slip and falls are more common at pools because, quite obviously, everything is wet.
In addition, head injuries can be a leading risk to kids as they jump and flip throughout the pool. In fact, head injuries in the water are a leading reason for drowning accidents. While these accidents often happen quickly, it is important to make sure you and/or a life guard are present at all times when your child is swimming.
Prepare your kids, but be prepared for the possibility of accidents
While every parent wants to let their kid be a kid, it is important to teach them proper safety measures. Wear proper gear for riding, don’t dive into the shallow end, and don’t jump off the monkey bars because Sam did. But, it’s important to remember that accidents do happen, and be prepared for the possibility.
