If you’re sharing a situation that was an accident, or incident, it is likely that you use those words interchangeably. However, these two words mean different things. When it comes to re-telling the situation, it is important that we choose the right word. But what’s the difference between accident vs incident? And what’s the big deal if we use one or the other?
Accident vs Incident: What’s the Difference?
Defining an incident. In general, when defining an incident we say it is an unplanned, undesired event that hinders completion of a task and that has the potential to cause injury, illness, or damage. By this term, incident merely has the potential to cause an injury. That means it does not have to result in one. Also note that unplanned and undesired does not mean it was unable to prevent or prepare for.
Defining an accident. Similarly, but not the same, an accident means an event that resulted in an injury, illness, or damage. Therefore, an accident vs incident, must result in some form of damage. Furthermore, it shows that the safety rules in place are not enough to prevent these events. So in that case, employers must adjust rules and guidelines to prevent any more of these accidents.
Why It Matters
Using the right word to describe your situation can help when you go to report it. Which, if you become involved in either type of these cases, you must report it. In either case, you want to report this type of event. So then employers will know they need to alter safety standards to prevent anything like that in the future. Furthermore, if you end up suffering from an injury it is important to report the accident. Without proper documentation it will be hard for you to receive the benefits you deserve.
