When it comes to worker’s compensation claims, ladder injuries are fairly common. From broken bones to back, neck, and head injuries, falling from a ladder can be extremely dangerous. So how can you make sure you don’t take a tumble? Here’s a few tips for preventing ladder falls in the workplace.
Preventing Ladder Falls in the Workplace
Inspect the Ladder
Before setting it up, before climbing it, you have to be sure to check the ladder. Ensuring you have a safe, working ladder is one of the best ways for preventing ladder falls. So inspect the rungs, looking for any damages. Then check the side rails, looking for any piece that appears broken, bent, loose, or cracked. Also, don’t forget to look over the ladder’s hardware, as that’s a crucial part of it’s functionality.
If it doesn’t appear to be in good shape, don’t use it. In many cases, we may see that it’s a safety concern and use it anyways. Don’t take the chances, it’s not worth the risk. Secure a better ladder, then complete the task.
Dry Wet Rungs
If you stored the ladder outside or in a cold, damp space, you may face wet rungs. So you want to take a cloth a wipe them down. Wet rungs can be a major safety hazard. And even when they don’t look that bad, they can still be slippery. So always wipe them down for good measure.
Always Use it On Level Ground
Do not ever use a ladder on un-level surfaces. You always want to make sure the surface or floor beneath the house is level so the ladder will be steady. If you must place it on a hill, slope, or uneven surface, then you’ll want to install a manufacturer’s leveler. This can help even out the landing and make a more stable space for the ladder. After securing the floor, you also want to secure the ladder at the top. Both of these practices will help in preventing ladder falls.
Watch Out for Traffic
Where ever you place the ladder, it needs to be a space free from traffic. The more people that come through the area, the more likely someone will bump into it. By doing so, they can decrease the ladder’s stability and send you falling. So you want to make sure not too many people will need to travel through the area while you’re on the ladder. And those that do, need to be aware of the proper safety standards in preventing ladder falls.
