Repetitive stress injuries can stem from a number of different circumstances, and preventing them in he workplace can be quite difficult. Ultimately, these types of injuries can be long-lasting and painful, but the onset of them is quite unpredictable. So, we’re looking at different ways to prevent their occurrence in the first place. That way, employees can avoid this type of pain, and employers can avoid unnecessary claims.

Repetitive Stress Injuries: Steps for Prevention

Prepare yourself. One way to prevent these injuries is to prepare yourself for the work. By that standard, you should do some light stretching before engaging in physical activity. Especially if you will be performing the task for a long amount of time. In addition, have available equipment on hand to make these tasks less stressful on your body. For example, use vises or clamps to grip things and perform other tasks when needed.

Do not forget to stop. At most times, we should remain busy at work. But there are a few exception when you need to stop. First of all, stop to take a break from a repetitive task every 30 minutes or so. Only give yourself enough time to walk around and loosen the muscles you were just straining. In addition, you should stop if you feel any pain. These repetitive movements, made for long periods of time, are the root of your repetitive stress injuries.

Always avoid. And there are some cases you should just avoid altogether. For instance, avoid bending your neck forward for long periods of time. This can cause serious neck and back issues. In addition, avoid standing or sitting in one place for too long. Be sure to remain mobile as much as possible. Get up to stretch and take a few steps. If you feel any stress in your body, take steps to relieve that pain at any moment possible. Stretching can work wonders for these types of injuries.

Keep It Moving

When all else fails, keep moving around as much as possible. One of the best ways to prevent RSIs is to move around and change positions. By doing this, you may be able to avoid the painful and long lasting affects of a repetitive stress injury. As an employer, encourage your employees to take a five minute break every hour and make a lap. Come say hi, stretch, take a mental pause… Encouraging these types of behaviors will increase work place morale, and ensure your employees that you have their best interest in mind.
