PPE
First, in order to safely work on a construction site, you must wear and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE). These are things that can protect a worker from hazards or injuries while on the job. For construction workers, these could include hard hats, safety goggles, sturdy work boots, and gloves. There are many jobs someone could have around a construction site that could require additional PPE. For example, a painter could need a respirator for fumes. Anyone who works around loud machinery should be wearing ear plugs. Roofers, or other workers who work at a height greater than 6 feet should be provided with fall protection equipment.
Employers should provide PPE to employees and make sure employees have proper training on how to use the PPE. In order for it to be effective, it is also up to employees to actually wear and use this PPE properly.
Machines and Equipment
Oftentimes, construction workers use heavy or dangerous equipment. For example, they may have to use excavators, dump trucks, bulldozers, jack hammers, and graders. These can be dangerous for both the operator as well as those nearby. Before using these, the operator should have proper training. Communication is crucial on a construction site. Everyone should know where they are supposed to be and what they are supposed to be doing. For example, if someone is going to be operating dangerous equipment, the others should know that they need to clear the area.
